what input method should I use?

There is so many input methods existing.My question is what 's the most stable input method in Linux! My system is Ubuntu 6.06. My system has SCIM.BUt I can't active it when I  press Ctrl+Space(The dafaule keys combination)(I set my system's default language is English,does it matter? But I can see chinese normally).What should I do?
