脚本中怎么让程序后台执行？

想让root-tail每五秒运行一次，可脚本第一次运行到root-tail的时候就停住了。
请问是哪里出错了？该怎么改

把root-tail的输出重定向,就不会影响前台作业了如:
[PHP]while $null
do
root-tail message>>tmp.txt
sllep 5s
done &[/PHP]

root-tail是把文件内容显示在桌面上的软件，重定向没用的
而且我是想让root-tail把message文件内容显示在桌面上的
重定向的话就看不到了

弄个脚本更新message文件，然后直接运行root-tail message&？
这个方法也试过了，不过root-tail似乎对于文件的修改没什么反应，除非是手动修改的
不知道为什么，待会再仔细看看man
本来也不是什么大问题，只是想不出解决的办法有点不爽
