These test are most desired:
Upgrade from a previous Mandrakelinux release.
Adding new media during installation.
Network configuration with a Sagem ADSL modem (DHCP or static) with eagle-usb.
Bugs:
broken console 1
Fixes:
Burning as user
Various udev switch related bugs
Text install with UTF8 strings
How to add a supplementary media:
Boot with the Mandrakelinux-10.1rc1-mini.i586.iso or the Mandrakelinux-10.1rc1-CD1.i586.iso
Select HTTP or FTP extra medium.
Wait for basesystem to install.
Follow the steps to configure your network.
Enter your mirror URL (check http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/cookerdevel.php3 to find mirrors). Use the complete URL path, and preferably use the frozen 10.1 subtree instead of the cooker one, e.g. ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributi ... .1/i586/media/main/
Add a new medium or proceed with the packages installation.
OK, now after such a pragmatic presentation, though a bit impersonal, here are some other, possibly less objective, thoughts. Mandrakelinux 10.1 will be the 16th distribution (after 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 6.0, 6.1, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and 10.0). It is the second distribution with the new development mode and a Community version (10.1.0) followed by an Official version (10.1.1). Its development was marked with the repair of a great number of small but annoying problems, not so many innovative changes, and we are still working on better tools standardization. The fact that there weren't many innovative changes doesn't mean there weren't any, and the switch to udev is one of them, as well as in dbus integration to improve the communication channel between the system and the user (even if we are not yet using it intensively). The last linux kernel also brings its bunch of new supported hardware, on top of the changes that had temporarily broken the CD burning as user.
The development of 10.1 has also been marked with a longer than usual delay in the schedule (http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/Mandrakelinux101), but also by a lower number of reported bugs than before (only 1800 bugs between April, 1st and September, 2nd against more than 3300 for the 10.0 between November, 1st, 2003 and April, 1st, 2004). However, the hot summer usually decreases the number of bugs, as seen with the last summer distro, the 9.2, which received 2400 bugs between April, 1st, 2003 and November, 1st, 2003. Which means that you do not have a lot of time left to find 600 new bugs and break the summer distro record.
Mandrakelinux cooker, for the very first time, grows to over 9000 packages, and with the new features to select network media at install time, you have direct access to all of these packages during the installation. The developers community also grows as 71 people have contributed to the Mandrakelinux 10.1 packages (65 for 10.0 and 62 for 9.2), Plus numerous translators, but I do not have the number right now
Moreover, Mandrakelinux 10.1 development also witnessed the Globe Trotter product, as well as the future Corporate Server and Desktop, based on the 10.0 Community branch. The 10.0 Community edition, which is still active, led to the release of a Mandrakelinux 10.0.2. |
