软件以LGPL发布，与以GPL发布有什么不同？

请问，软件（不是库！）以LGPL发布，与以GPL发布有什么不同呢？我原先一直认为软件是以GPL发布的，而某些库才能以LGPL发布。但是现在看到有些软件是以LGPL发布，所以不太明白，也不知道这样做与GPL发布有什么不同和限制。能请诸位高人解释一下吗？法律文本看过，但是还是没有理解。谢谢！

我也看到过这些话，但是还是没说出本质来。我想得到一个例子。比如，我的软件是LGPL发布的，是不是意味着别人可以修改我的软件？是不是意味着别人修改我的软件以后，传给第三者时不需要发布源代码？抑或是，别人可以使用我的源代码，并增加新的功能，但不需要为新的功能开放源码，但只需要开放原来我的源码？因为原来LGPL是针对库的，现在可以针对软件了。所以不知道怎么回事。
