4. emacs-snapshot is a set of packages of the CVS version of GNU Emacs for the Debian operating system. It is updated weekly from the CVS trunk. Three flavors are available: a GTK version (emacs-snapshot-gtk), a legacy X11 version (emacs-snapshot) and a console-only version (emacs-snapshot-nox).

8. me to rethink my involvement in Emacs for Debian, and I realized
   
9. that I have ignored the GFDL problem for much too long.  There is
   
10. now very little hope for a reversal of this situation, and for
    
11. better or worse, GNU manuals are now considered non-free in Debian.

13. I have absolutely no intention of stripping emacs-snapshot of its
    
14. manuals.  I consider this solution both a disservice to our users,
    
15. and an insult to the upstream developers (and since I am somewhat
    
16. active upstream, this includes myself).  Moving emacs-snapshot
    
17. itself to non-free (which is, as we all know, not part of Debian)
    
18. isn't attractive either.

20. The conclusion is that I have chosen to orphan emacs-snapshot,
    
21. effective in the just uploaded version 20070302-1 which corresponds
    
22. to Emacs 22.0.95, possibly the last pretest before the 22.1 release.
